Shiloh, a great book

Comment:

me and my class read your Shiloh book. I really enjoyed it. It is a great book and I have some questions for you. Do you know how old Shiloh was in the movie? How do you feel about the character Judd? Is there any more Shiloh Movies? Did you like writing the book? When did th First Shiloh Book come out? Those are the questions I would like to ask you. I love your books and the Shiloh movie. –

Phyllis replied:

Two different dogs, who looked just alike, played in the movie.  When one got tired, the other took over.   One was older than the other.  There are two more Shiloh movies–Shiloh Season and Saving Shiloh.   The character Judd had a lot of problems.  The actor who played him was a wonderful, soft-spoken man in real life.

Shiloh–the inspiration

Comment:

I wanted to know how you got the idea to wright Shiloh the book. Was It when you were little did something happen to you or a friend? or did you just think about it? what was your inspration to wright it? how did you think of the idea? also I would like to know if you had a dog named Shiloh? I also liked the book a lot when I read it in my class.

Phyllis replied:

I came across a dog like Shiloh in the little community of Shiloh, West Virginia.  That was why I wrote the book.  But I grew up with a dog named Pepper.

A Small Question About Shiloh

Comment:

I know I’ve written to you many times before but I haven’t gotten an answer and my friends have. So I was just wondering, how did you think of all the characters in Shiloh’s traits like Doc Murphy, Marty, Judd, etc. I’m hoping you’ll answer and have a wonderful day!

Phyllis replied:

If I get a lot of questions that are the same, I just answer one of them.  My fingers can only type so long, and I just don’t have time to keep answering the same question over and over again.  The answer is that I have to imagine that I am each character, and think a lot about what he would be like and how he would act.

Where can I buy the “Shiloh” movie DVD?

So many teachers have asked where they can buy the DVD of the first “Shiloh” movie, so I’m answering on two different blogs.  Amazon carries it in its “CD & vinyl” category.  I believe the selling price is $57.   They also carry some of the other Shiloh movies.  You might try, too, buying it second hand.  See if they list that choice.   Phyllis Naylor

Comparing the book to the movie

Comment:

I have some questions about Shiloh. First what got you thinking about the charector Judd Traver? Also why did the book Shiloh the dog didn’t just run away from Marty like wouldn’t you be scared of a human if you were abused? Another question is why did Judd take back Shiloh in the movie but in the book Judd Travers let Marty take Shiloh? Last in the movie Marty’s friend was a girl and in the book it was a boy? Thank you for making that great book and answering my question.

Phyllis replied:

Some runaway dogs might make the distinction between a large adult speaking harshly and a young boy speaking gently.  Shiloh was reluctant at first to come to Marty.  You’d have to ask the screen writer why he made the changes he did.  I know that they put in a girl as a friend instead of a boy because they felt that it was too boy-centered, and girls might not like the movie so much if they didn’t make the change.

Judd’s personality

Comment:

Hello it is very nice to meet you I love the story Shiloh you wrote. My whole class read it. I want to ask you were did you get the idea of Judd and his traits? The book Shiloh is amazing book again and I can not wait to read the second part.

Phyllis replied:

When I write a book, I have to imagine how it would feel to be each character.  How Judd  would walk, how he would talk, how he would sit or laugh or smell.  I have to become that character for a bit.  Then I have to weave all that into the story, so that the reader can better imagine him too.

The Personalities in Shiloh

Comment:

Where did you get the idea to give everyone a certain personality trait. Also this was a book my class read chapter by chapter each day. We always asked to read another chapter because the Shiloh is such a great book! Overall, Shiloh is one of my favorite books to read and the series was also great. Another thing that is great about the book is the cliff hangers and the backstory about the characters like Judd where he got abused as a kid to show maybe why he abused the animals. This series was a great one and made me want to read more.

Phyllis replied:

Every person on earth is different in some way from others, so they should be in a story too.  It is easier for a reader to tell characters apart if they each have their own personality.
