I just wanted to say the Alice books are incredible! I like how u dont sugar coat anything and how you’re straight forward with the information u use in the books! Whenever I hear the name Alice, it’s like reading a letter from my dearest, closest friend. I hate the fact there aren’t more books like these out there. The Alice books are realistic and I’m not gonna lie there were times I shed tears for these books and jumped out of my seat in joy. I was re-reading Now Ill Tell You Everything and at first, I thought u were gonna make Alice wait til marriage before she lost her virginity, cuz most teen books do, but like I said, realistic. You are an incredible and beautiful woman and I hope you are happy and in good health!

Phyllis replied:

Thank you so much.  Yes, the Alice books are known for their honesty, but that also gets me in trouble a lot.  Some parents want the books removed from libraries, but librarians usually stand up for me .  One mother was terribly upset because her ten year old daughter found out how babies are conceived when she read “Lovingly Alice”.  She said she wanted to give that information to her daughter herself when the girl was eleven .

An appreciation and Alice marriage

Comment:

I just want to say the Alice books are amazing! I’ve been reading them since I was 12 and just love them! As an Author, nobody knows your characters better than you and I was wondering did Patrick ever regret marrying Alice, I kno he would never want to hurt Alice and he said he didn’t cheat on her nor did he want to, but he kissed helene on the forehead, doesn’t that count as cheating? He also tried defending his feelings and actions why? And I noticed later on that they rarely kissed anymore as they got older, was that because as you get older, you slowly fall out of love? Or were they not attracted to eachother anymore? But he did take her on amazing trips at the end, so that’s a sign of a good marriage i guess? And my last question is when you’re writing, do you ever like one character better than the rest of them? If so, who? Thank u for your time to read this! 💛💛

Phyllis replied:

You keep asking a lot of questions, and the answers should really be your own, depending on what the book meant to you.  Yes, Patrick crossed the line, and one reason he told Alice about it was that this would help him not repeat it.  It may shock you to know that just because you marry the man of your dreams, it does not mean that another man may seem attractive to  you, and vice versa.  Being married means that you made a commitment to reserve that sort of love for each other, not that you will never be tempted or enjoy being in another man’s presence.    The Alice books were a story, and it is partly up to the reader to answer her own questions.  But do remember that when the Alice series began and she was in grade school and then middle and high school, there were often 3 books for every year of her schooling.  In the last book, it takes her from age 18 to 60, right?  Think how fast the years were passing.  I didn’t have TIME or SPACE to record all the kissing she and Patrick did all those years, so yes they had a good marriage, and I would never tell you that I loved one character more than another.

Patrick is a confusing character

Comment:

So I just turned 19 & still learning about life and people and love. And Patrick was sweet and smart but completely confusing to me when it came to his relationship with Alice. When he broke up with Alice, he said that penny was nice but “she wasn’t you”… Like he couldn’t figure that out while he and Alice were together? Cuz I’ve had a boyfriend say that once. Then he dated other girls but also seemed to have a problem when he thought Alice was taking interest in a college boy and Tony. And even though he broke up with Alice and dated other girls, he said he was hurt when he read she was engaged. The only thing I wonder is what if it hadn’t been Alice in that airport? What if it had been penny or marcie or amanda or jessica? Would he had gone for them or would he still had loved Alice? Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad Patrick chose Alice and decided she was the one for him but still. He’s weird 😂 I thought this was a question only the author could answer ❤

Phyllis replied:

Love is complicated, isn’t it?   Life is full of “what if’s.”   Maybe he would have married someone else.  Maybe they both would. And maybe they would both be happy.  Maybe one would be happy and one would be sad….  Maybe, maybe….. The fact is, there isn’t just one person in the whole world that is “right” for you or for any girl.  Most people only date a few before they make their choice, and in picking and choosing and breaking up and trying a different person, they finally find one that they like best–someone they are most comfortable with.  Sometimes they have to make a lot of mistakes before they figure that out.

Now I tell you everything

Comment:

Before I asked my question, I wanted to say thank you for creating such an amazing series. Alice is one of the series I have picked up and re-read many times in the years. I wanted to know if you have ever considered letting us know a bit more about the life events of some of the other main characters throughout the

Phyllis replied:

I’m glad that you liked the series so much.  I’ve often been asked to write a book or a series on Pamela or Elizabeth or one of the other characters, but then I’d be spending months of every year on Alice characters when there are SO many other books I want to write.

Book cover question & beliefs in revenge

Comment:

Hi, it’s me again, sorry to bug u out of your busy day. I just wanted to ask if the guy Alice is holding hands with on the Cover of “Now I’ll Tell You Everything” is Patrick or Dave and the boy she’s sitting with on the cover of Intensely Alice Patrick or not. Also Do you believe in revenge? I’ve been curious about it lately because all my life my father told me that revenge is the best solution, so have my aunts like if a boy cheats on you or if he leaves u for someone else, I always thought so but now I’m not sure, I want to be the best person I can be like Alice, I want to be a sensible grown up since I will be soon. So what are your thoughts because personally I think you’re very wise and you seem kind and educated about life. 💕💕💕

Phyllis replied:

I wish I could spend more time with each fan who writes to me, but if you saw my desk…and the piles of notes and clippings and books scattered about me that I need when writing a book–you would see that my time is limited.  An artist or photographer who is chosen to provide a cover for one of my books usually determines what he or she (plus the editor) would like to portray.  And many times, it’s sort of  toss-up, so that the reader can project whatever they want onto the picture.  So why don’t you decide who the boy would be.  As for revenge, do you really want to spend your life “getting even” with people?  Ugh.

Phyllis replied:

Which books can’t you find?   Are you sure that you can’t get some used books from Amazon if they’ve run out of new ones?  And have you considered buying the whole series so you’ll have all 28 books, beginning with Starting with Alice and ending with Now I’ll Tell You Everything?

Just a few questions

Comment:

Hi, I’m in my junior year of high school and have read ALL of the Alice books and just loved them and I’m glad Alice and Patrick finally stayed together in the end and Alice and her friends made their dreams come true. I just wanted to ask, Why didn’t Pamela want kids and were you sad to end the series? And do you ever think you’ll get tired of writing?

Phyllis replied:

I don’t know why some people don’t want to have children, any more than I know why some people like raspberries and others would prefer carrots.  Perhaps Pamela sensed that her mother didn’t really get a kick out of being a parent, so didn’t see much attraction there for her either.  Or she wanted a life centered around her own interests, not those of children.   Whatever her reason, it was a good one, because people who don’t want children shouldn’t have them, though some change their minds after they earn to love the little ones if they come.  Yes, I was sad to leave the series, but anxious to write how the story all comes out and get on to other things  No, I’ll ever tire of writing.

Amy Sheldon

Comment:

Hello! I really love the alice books. I discovered them during quarantine and I’ve just finished them. I always wondered about Amy Sheldon though. The books never exactly specified about her. Where did she come from? What exactly did she struggle from?
Thank you byeeeeeeeee😁

Phyllis replied:

She was just another person who entered Alice’s life via school.  We don’t know just what psychological and/or physical problems she was having that kept her at a more juvenile stage of development.  But her disability did have the result of annoying others, Alice included, even though Alice really felt for the girl and tried to help her.

The Characters

Comment:

I have been reading the Alice books since I was a little girl and I love how unlike some authors you gave each and every character their own traits, backgrounds, and personalities. I wanted to ask you, how did you come up with these characters? Especially Alice’s close friends and family? Were they based off of people you know?

Phyllis replied:

Some were based on people I know.  Mostly I just picked a characteristic here, a voice there, a personality somewhere else.  Just hearing them talk in my head gave me an idea of what the character was really like.
