Was Alice story made into a tv movie? We thought we saw her & Donald meeting years later in a shopping mall on the escalator and..the TARZAN yell to Alice!

Phyllis replied:

There has been only one movie made, based very loosely on The Agony of Alice, called Alice Upside Down.  There is no movie with Alice and Donald meeting on an escalator years later in a shopping mall.

Alice and how her life turned out!

Comment:

I was so glad that Alice and Patrick ended up marrying and having kids and just plain being together. I will tell you that I did cry when Ben(Alice’s dad) died. He was one of my favorite characters. I want to thank you for writing these books. You have impacted many life’s including mine. I started reading the Alice books when Inwas 12 and I am now 13. I read fast, but that does not take away anything. I loved reading the Alice series’s and want to thank you for all you have done!

Phyllis replied:

Thanks so much for your email.  (I cried too).  If you read all 28 books in one year, you are one fast reader!!!

Phyllis, you’re so phyllisophical!

Comment:

Dear Phyllis, in a past inquiry that we sent, you said that if you were god, that would explain the mess that the world was in. But why?? It seems as though you are lacking in the self-confidence department. This worries us as we love you dearly as a companion and motherly figure. You are imaginitive, talented and utterly philosophical. You have created what some would describe as the greatest book series to ever grace this earth. We want you to know that you are an inspiration and we want you to be happy. Please realize that you are a badass! Thank you so much for your time. We love you Phyllis!

Phyllis replied:

Wow.  You’re the nicest thing that’s happened to me today.  Just seems that the world is so tangled right now that it would take a super-duper somebody to solve all of earth’s problems.  Actually, I am pretty happy, probably because I don’t have to solve all the world’s problems, though I wish I could.  Thanks so much for your pep talk!  I’ll inform my friends that I’m a badass.

Love from Singapore. Thank you for the Alice series!

Comment:

I still remember reading The Agony of Alice in my middle school years. It was one of the books I could remember reading because it was so engaging and relatable.

I am 25 now and the Alice series suddenly came to my mind recently and I finished all the books in a span of 1 month! It was such an incredible journey to see how Alice has grown as a person (eventhough she isn’t real). I’m definitely not embarrassed to read the Alice series at my age haha.

I cried so much reading Now I’ll Tell You Everything. Reading her happy endings and remembering all the flashbacks of what she went through from a teenager to a grown woman makes me feel a sense of bittersweet-ness. I don’t want it to end but at the same time the story of Alice wrapped up so beautifully.

I’m so glad she ended up with Patrick because of their history. They had so much obstacles between them from Penny to being miles away from each other. And to see them reunite at the airport and rekindle their relationship from then on was such a beautiful moment! Best part of the series for me.

I am going to buy the whole collection of your book and keep it in my bookshelf to reread them again. It will be my first collection of book in my whole 25 years of life and I’m honored to have the Alice series as my first. You made me feel the joy of reading with your writing and thank for making that change in my life, no matter how small the impact is.

Phyllis replied:

It’s wonderful to get emails from the other side of the world.  Thanks so much for taking the time to write to me.  I’m truly glad the books meant that much to you.  It was always exciting for me when the time rolled around to write another book in the series.

Banned Book Question about Alice series

Comment:

As you can tell by the subject title, I’m asking about the Alice series being banned. I think it’s a great series, but I’m doing research on it and was hoping to get your opinion on how the Alice series impacted society. If you could reply back to me I would really appreciate your opinion!

Phyllis replied:

I don’t know how the series impacted society, but I know how it has impacted hundreds and hundreds of young people, especially girls, because they have written to me.  Perhaps 95% of the letters and emails express appreciation for writing about topics they have always wondered about, but have hesitated to bring up with their mothers because they felt their mothers would not appreciate it, and question them as to why they had asked.  Many have also talked about the many decisions Alice has had to make as she has progressed from 8 years old at the start of the series to 60 at the end.  Not all of her choices have been good ones, but she has learned from them, and readers seem to feel that his has been useful to them in their own lives.  The very things Alice talks and thinks about, however, seem to be the very things that some parents want banned from their libraries.  Fortunately, most librarians stand up for the right to learn, to know, and to read the books you choose yourselves, not what others decide is best for you.

Thank You For Writing.

Comment:

I just wanted to say thank you. I think I started reading your series at my local library in elementary school; to be honest, I don’t even remember why, out of so many books, I happened to pick up my first Alice book. But I’m so grateful that I did. Alice, her family, her friends, her boyfriends, they all changed my life over the years. I remember going to a book drive where they were selling gently used books for a cause, and I was so excited to find Alice in Rapture, Sort of. I know I’m rambling, but I just found this website, so I wanted to thank you. I’m now 16, about to turn 17, but I’ve kept up and reread your books throughout the years. There’s no series like yours that kept me happy and laughing. So again, thank you. I wanted to ask a question too- why did you decide to make Alice tone deaf? Also, do Elizabeth, Pamela, and Alice end up keeping in touch for the rest of their lives?

Phyllis replied:

I wanted Alice to be different from her dad in some profound way.  Music is his life, and she has a hard time telling one note from another.  But I think the reader can feel his love for her nonetheless, and Alice is secure in that love. As for your second question, have you read the very last book in the series, “Now I’ll Tell You Everything?”   Thanks so much for writing to me.

Why Patrick?

Comment:

Why does Alice end up with Patrick when he treated her so badly through high school?

Phyllis replied:

Does he treat her badly, or is he just being honest about things–his plans, his feelings for her, his indecisions….?

Alice is love, Alice is life, Alice is in love with her fathers wife.

Comment:

Dearest Phyllis, the Alice books have meant so much over the course this year. We love love the book so much that we actually made pineapple upside down cake using the recipe found on page 2-3 of the book I like him, he likes her. In our opinion, the book should be titled I like her, she likes her, because Alice is clearly in love with Sylvia Summer and Sylvia is in love with Alice’s father. So far in the book it has yet to be confirmed, but since the Alice series is very long, we haven’t seen her be confirmed bisexual. There is a possibility that this happens in a later book, but we cannot wait. Alice is obviously bisexual and our suspicions are tearing us apart. In the book, when describing Lester’s ex-girlfriend Marilyn, Alice says she pictured her without a bra in a see-through dress running through a field of flowers. Picturing the boobs. Thus, bisexual. We also have a conspiracy that Alice is God. Every person that we have met in this world has had some Alice within them. This clearly proves that she is God. If Alice is God, and you are her creator, then what are you?

Phyllis replied:

Hmmm.  If I am God, that must explain what a mess our world is in.  I am not going to approve or disprove your guesses about Alice’s sexual identity.  There are 28 books waiting for you to read them, so why should I ruin your suspense? ( I hope you enjoyed the cake).
