Was Shiloh actually abused?

The real dog that inspired the Shiloh books appeared to be abused when we           found her.  As we approached her, hiding in the weeds, she lay down on her belly trembling and shaking.  I had gently reached out to pet her, and though her tail was wagging, she wriggled away on her belly, shaking even more.  I decided right then that she had been treated badly and that’s when the idea for a book began to form.
