Am Now a Mother Myself
Question:
I read the first Alice book when I was about 10, and thought it was hysterical. I didn’t read the rest of the series until my 20s, when I started revisiting books I had read as a child, then got hooked on Alice and her story.
In the time since reading the rest of Alice’s story, I lost my mother to cancer. I can’t tell you how much it helped to be going through the loss of my mom, and relating it to something that I had read in an Alice book. Alice’s realization that there are “substitute mothers” in the unlikeliest of place was something that was very helpful, and true, for me at a time when I needed it the most. I feel like she has been my friend through this crazy journey of losing my mom, and even now, I revisit some of the books if I need some comfort.
I also became a mom last year and am appreciating the books from a parenting perspective, as far as seeing what kind of parent I hope to become.
I hope you are enjoying your “retirement”, and I wanted to thank you so much.
Phyllis replied:
How wonderful to hear from you, and to think that you and Alice have experienced so much of the same things. Thank you for taking the time from your busy life as a new mom to write to me.
