Using Free Texts

Comment:

Hi Ms. Naylor. During these strange times, I find myself teaching my grade 5/6 class from home, and struggling to provide work each day from limited resources. I have often read Shiloh to my classes and assigned work with each chapter. I would like to do that again now, but the issue is that the students don’t have the book. I have found free online versions (notably with archive.org) but that raises ethical questions about copyright etc. So I thought I’d ask you directly, and I will respect your answer, whatever it is. Would you be all right with me using a free copy of your book and distributing that to my students? Of course this would be a one time request, and next year we can go back to reading actual copies of your book. Please let me know your thoughts. Many thanks,

Phyllis replied:

We have had several requests to do this, but I checked with my publisher and we cannot allow it.   We do understand how difficult this is for teachers.  We know that once a class is into a book, however, it is very difficult not to finish it and know how it ended.  What we do permit is for a teacher to film himself reading the book aloud, and to have that a part of your online teaching.  We are only giving permission to do this one time, in this particular situation on a channel available only to your students.   Please give your class my best wishes regardless of what you decide.

I’m so glad I got to read your book

Comment:

I am going into 6th grade next year. My teacher sent home your book ‘Shiloh’ to read while in quarantine. She picked it for me because I have lots of dogs and love dogs. I love your book. I am so glad I got to read it!

Thanks!

Phyllis replied:

I’m glad you got to read it too.  You would also like the other three books in the Shiloh quartet–Shiloh season, Saving Shiloh, and A Shiloh Christmas.  It’s all one continued story, and tells what finally happens between Marty and Judd Travers.

Shiloh read-aloud

Comment:

Hi there! I’m a fourth grade teacher who was in the middle of a Shiloh Novel study before the pandemic hit! My students were so interested and excited about the book and I’ve been looking for ways to continue reading it with them. Is it possible to have your permission to do a read aloud to post in our google classroom and then delete once the school year is over? We would be so thankful to finish it together!! Thanks so much in advance 🙂

Phyllis replied:

You have my permission.  Best of luck.

Shiloh Read-Aloud for Public Library

Comment:

I’m a public youth librarian, and I’d like to read aloud from Shiloh on my library’s Facebook page as a live stream event. I would remove the video when the live stream was finished. May I have permission to do this? Thank you,

Phyllis replied:

Yes, you have my permission to do this.

Request to read aloud in GC

Aloha,
My name is Christy Hirae and I am a grade 4 teacher at Paauilo Elementary and Intermediate School. I would like to request your permission to read the book Shiloh aloud to my students. I will record the audio and post link in my GC for only my students. Once the school year is over, I will remove access in my GC.
Mahalo,

Use of Shiloh

Comment:

I teach 3rd grade and we use Bookworms Curriculum for our reading and writing programs. We were just about to start reading Shiloh in class. With the current situation, we would like to still read this book with our students. Would you allow us to download a copy of your book to share with students? We would love to give them a copy of the book but we are not allowed into our classrooms to get them. Please let me know. Thank you!

Phyllis replied:

I have emailed my editor, who is working from home–away from her New York office–but she hasn’t replied yet.  I know she is swamped.  We can give permission for you to read the book aloud to your class over a private channel–to be used only for this particular crisis–but no one has asked so far to download copies of the whole book for each student, so I don’t know if that will be possible.

Permission to read

Comment:

I was just preparing to read Shiloh Season to my 3rd grade students after spring break. I had already read the first book to them, and they were so excited to continue. Then the virus closed schools. I would like your permission to record myself reading the book and post it on my Google Classroom. Thank you!

Phyllis replied:

My publisher gives permission as long as you are reading on a private “channel” accessible only to your students and that you use this only in this particular crisis.

Permission to read Shiloh in a Zoom meeting

Comment:

Would you please grant me permission to read your Shiloh book to my class as a read aloud using a Zoom meeting. My students love read aloud time and they asked me in our last Zoom meeting if I would read to them. I thought Shiloh would be a great book for them since we can’t be together as a class during the Coronavirus outbreak?
Thank you.

Phyllis replied:

Yes, you have my permission to use Shiloh in this way during this particular crisis.
