Helps Children think

Comment:

we just finished the Shiloh trilogy and my children were excited daily to read the books. They couldn’t get enough. We are now going to read Shiloh Christmas even though it’s January. They loved the Judd character and his transformation. Thank you for providing such a wonderful and engaging series that excites children’s love for reading and helps them think.

Phyllis replied:

Well, “A Shiloh Christmas” starts out in summer time, so I think you could read it any time.  I think your children will be happy at the change in Judd as the series ends, and I appreciate your writing to me.

why was Judd’s dad mean to him?

Comment:

my class and I just read the book called Shiloh.I loved the book so much.I have two questions, why did Judd Travers dad abuse him when he was a kid?And why is Judd mean to people like his dad was mean to him? My favorite part was at the end of the book Marty got to keep Shiloh. I really love dogs like Marty likes Shiloh.Dogs are so loyal and special.I am from Waynesville Ohio, And I am in fourth grade.

Phyllis replied:

The thing about meanness is that it often goes on and on.  Some parents, who are having a hard time in their lives, take their anger and disappointment out on their family.  And if a child has been bullied and mistreated by a parent, he may grow up with so much anger that he takes it out on another kid, or on his own children later on.  But there are other children who choose a different way–to be the exact opposite of the person who mistreated them.  They make the decision to be kind and understanding. And the world becomes a better place because they made a different choice.

I’m in 4th grade at Jeffers Elementary. I am a huge fan of your Shiloh books. I love series so much that I’m encouraging your to write a 5th book. Have you ever thought about adding more to the series?

Phyllis replied:

I’m delighted that you love the books so much but I really think that the four Shiloh books say all that I wanted to tell of the story.

My fourth grade ELA class has read and watched the movie Shiloh. I really liked the book and the movie. The part I liked about the movie is when Marty got Shiloh and Judd feeling better.

Phyllis replied:

I love the idea of a class reading the book first, then watching the movie and comparing them to each other.

How long did it take?

Comment:
My 4th grade class just read Shiloh, and watched the movie. That movie was the best movie I have ever seen. I love Shiloh he was so cute. What made you want to write books? About how long did it take you to write Shiloh?

Phyllis replied:

I loved to make up stories, and so the stories became books.  It took about six weeks to write the first draft of Shiloh.

the whole Shiloh Series

my 4th grade class just finished reading your book Shiloh and watching the movie.I really enjoyed it,it was one of my favorite books I have ever read. Right now I am reading Shiloh Christmas and it sounds very interesting. How long did it take you to write the whole entire Shiloh series. What inspired you to start reading.

Phyllis replied:

My parents inspired me to read and write because they read aloud to us every night, almost until we were in high school.  It was just a family thing.  They read with great drama and it was so much fun.  The first book of the Shiloh quartet came out in 1991 and the fourth and last book came out in 2015.  But I was also writing other kinds of books during that time.
