Why was Judd Travers so mean in the first place?

Phyllis replied:

Because he was very mistreated as a boy, so as he grew to be a man, he imitated his father, and was cruel to others. Not all children who had unhappy childhoods turn out to be cruel. Some want to be the very opposite of the way adults treated them when they were young, and they imitate a kind teacher or neighbor.
