Your book

My granddaughter Isla is 7 years old. The book Cuckoo Feathers was her first chapter book she read. She really liked it. I am really proud of her!

That’s wonderful!  It’s exciting to read a whole book by yourself for the first time.  I had trouble learning to read at first when I was small.  My parents read aloud to us every night, but when I got to first grade, I simply  did not understand how other children could look at those black marks on white paper and turn them into words.  I finally decided that maybe reading was just making stories up, so when it was my turn to read, I made up a story about a dog chasing a cat up a tree. The teacher looked at me sorrowfully and shook her head.   But when another teacher introduced me to phonics and I learned to sound out words, I eagerly read and read.   If your granddaughter liked “Cuckoo Feathers” she would probably enjoy the other books in the series: “Patches and Scratches,” “Anyone Can Eat Squid”  and “Eating Enchiladas.”
