I’m in 4th grade at Hickory flat attendance center in Mississippi. I really enjoy your book, and i love your details that you put in it. Did shiloh really get kicked on and ate up by a German shepherd?

Phyllis replied:

No.

the book shiloh

Comment:

My class just got done with Shiloh, and it was sad and very good. I loved it.I was wondering if you have animals or dogs? I Loved that Marty worked very hard to keep shiloh. I cried when Judd shot the doe and Marty had to keep it a secret from his parents.

Phyllis replied:

There were a number of sad things in the book, but these things happen sometimes.  I grew up with a springer spaniel and many cats, so I understand how much you can love a pet.

I love the book Shiloh, and I love When Marty was telling Judd that he wanted Shiloh and Judd had know idea what to do because Marty saw Judd kill a doe out of season. what inspired you to make Judd in the book Shiloh? Did you have someone in your life like Judd?

Phyllis replied:

I’m happy to say that there was no one like Judd in my life, though there are certainly people who mistreat their pets.  But if there was no one like Judd in my book, there would have been no story.  Certainly not this one.  Right?

Marty and Judd

Comment:

my question is how did you come up with a boy named Marty and a man named Judd? I also have another question too. That question is that if Shiloh was actually a girl in real life how come you changed her into a boy for the story? Finally, my last question is that why did you name the dog Shiloh if his actual name is Clover?I am so excited to read more of your books

Phyllis replied:

Sometimes the author doesn’t know why.  Things just seem better to change things around.  I named the dog Shiloh because in real life, that’s where we came across the dog that inspired the books– Shiloh, West Virginia–just a small community up in the hills.

I always loved stories, and when I found the dog who became Shiloh, I felt this would make a good story.
