Shiloh Blog
shiloh
Hi. I am a 4th grader at Kent Prairie Elementry School. My question is did judd travers realy exist.
I made the character up, but when I look at some of the dogs that the Humane Society has rescued–animals that have been left out in the cold–chained–without food or water, some of them badly injured, it makes me wonder about the owners and what made them the way they are. I’m glad that there are caring people in the world, like Marty, who want to help these animals.
Just Saying Thanks
Hi,
I just wanted to say thank you for writing memorable books from my childhood. My favorite was The Grand Escape, but Shiloh was a book that connected my sense of empathy for animals as a young child. I have a little three year old boy who adores books at bedtime, and it is becoming our cherished time to imagine, laugh, think critically, and most importantly, bond. As he gets older, I cannot wait to introduce your books to him.
I just wanted to say thank you for your heart and your writing, and for truly shaping my childhood. Love and blessings,
It was so thoughtful of you to write to me. The favorite part of my own childhood was story time in the evening–it lasted about a half hour. Mother read a story from the Bible story book, and then a chapter of a classic–Alice in Wonderland or something. But it was Dad reading books by Mark Twain that really thrilled me. I’m so glad you are establishing a similar ritual with your little boy. I hope you can find all the books that you yourself loved.
Permission
Can I get your permission to record the Shiloh books on YouTube for my students? I am doing distance learning with 5/6ath grade SpEd, and it would be wonderful if I could assign chapters to them to read-along on their own.
We LOVED the first book!!
You can only record yourself reading the books on a private channel, available only to your school, and for a one-time use in your classroom.
SHILOH (PDF)
This is a big ask, but is there a way that a PDF of Shiloh would be available to my students (18 of them). We read this every year in my classroom, but I am unable to think of a better way to make this available to my students during e learning. Thanks!
The answer from my publisher is that they regret they are not able to provide free pdfs of the entire book for students.
Shiloh movie
I am a teacher and just read Shiloh with the 4th grader I am tutoring. I am wanting to watch the movie with him and can not find it. Is it available?
Go to Amazon and look under “Movies and TV”
Abuse
Was Shiloh actually abused?
The real dog that inspired the Shiloh books appeared to be abused when we found her. As we approached her, hiding in the weeds, she lay down on her belly trembling and shaking. I had gently reached out to pet her, and though her tail was wagging, she wriggled away on her belly, shaking even more. I decided right then that she had been treated badly and that’s when the idea for a book began to form.
Potential Zoom: International School of Tucson 3rd grade!
My students just finished reading Shiloh and absolutely loved it. I love reading my childhood favorites with them and seeing our literature has the same effect years later!
I know you are incredibly busy, however, I wanted to reach out and see if you could potentially Zoom with my 3rd grade class. They would love to ask questions and thank you.
I hope all is well and that you are staying safe,
I could do a 15-minute Zoom session sometime in January if you can give me the link that would connect us. Contact me after the first of the year at phyllis_naylor@comcast.net and we can set up a time.
Class Project
I’m in 5th grade. I love your books on Shiloh; I am reading A Shiloh Christmas next. The books remind me of my dog, Jack. He is almost fifteen years old. He is blind and deaf though. He might pass soon, but your books will always remind me of him. At the start of 5th Grade we did a Newbery Award Winner Books and I chose Shiloh. I can relate to Marty because I love animals just like him. After reading your books I got into writing, I already was into writing because I made comics but now in 5th grade We write four paragraphs or more in our essays.
I loved to make my own books too when I was in 5th grade. I wrote a lot of mysteries for a detective I named Penny. I illustrated them too, so I can understand your attraction to making comics also. (I loved to draw lace, so in each of my Penny books, if she’s in a cave or climbing a mountain, something always happens to her dress so that I could draw her lacy underwear!)
SHILOH Zoom Sessions with author
My students would love to meet you on Zoom. We are reading the Shiloh books in class and have so many questions. Is it possible that this could happen?
I have been getting so many requests for this, and I know that teachers are having a really difficult time right now, some teaching from home, some from school, on and off again, and if a 15-minute Zoom session with your class would help, I will try to fit in a few a week and see how it works out. You’d have to make it easy for me–have a link set up so that all I have to do is click it; you would need to have finished reading at least the first book in the series, Shiloh, and have a little practice with students speaking slowly and loud enough and distinct. If you are allowing each child to ask a question, please make sure that the same questions are not being asked over and over again. I’m sorry I can’t give you more than 15 minutes per class, but we’ll try to make each minute count.
4th grade class to begin reading Shiloh
I sent you a message through Facebook messenger to see if my class could meet you before they begin reading Shiloh. Oh what a treat that would be for them.
I don’t keep up with Facebook. It’s all I can do to keep this website going. I will be glad to meet up with our students after they have read Shiloh when they will have some good questions to ask.
